Canon 24mm 1.4 L II

Canon’s premium wide-angle lens

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

The Canon 24mm 1.4 L Lens is Canon’s elite wide angled lens, directed towards professional landscape photographers. As wedding photographers, we can still benefit from a lens of this nature as well. What bride doesn’t want wide angle views of her wedding reception location or an epic environmental portrait with her new husband after the ceremony? Having extra wide angle ability has resulted in some incredible images that have a very different look and feel than our standard and longer portrait lenses.

While we love the awesome environmental portraits that this lens creates, it can also save the day if photographing in a small space. With it’s wide angle perspective it can create a lot of image in very tight quarters. Imagine photographing a bride getting ready with her five bridesmaids in a cramped hotel bathroom… You can immediately understand how helpful this focal distance can be for these reoccurring wedding day situations! Not only can it see a lot more, with its 1.4 aperture it can create razor-sharp shallow depth of field.

This shallow DOF look is what brides crave and having the ability to create it while they are getting ready in very tight places has been very sought after by us. We also shoot the Canon 35mm L and it’s a great lens for most of these situations. However, on occasion, it’s just not wide enough for the coverage we need and the 24mm 1.4 fills in perfectly. The colors are well matched to the rest of the Canon lineup and with the recent Mark II update, it has the latest coatings and weather sealing to stand up to the rigors of photography life.

Epic Environmental Portraits

Epic; in a word. This lens creates images with lots of appeal! Being able to capture and display an entire scene at picturesque locations can create jaw dropping images. While this lens was designed and geared towards landscape photographers, a wedding photographer can use it to create cool environmental portraits that add some image diversity to the final product. This lens also handles flares very well. In fact, we tried as hard as possible to make it flare excessively by shooting into direct sunlight. Even with such extreme flare testing this lens simply manages it. This give us loads of flexibility, that we really appreciate during the hustle of wedding days.

Tight Spots

If you find yourself in a tight room or the occasional desperate indoor group shot situation the 24mm 1.4 L can be a total life saver. It can just see a lot of scene and still retains the beautiful Canon L look. It does, however – being at the wider end of the spectrum – suffer from bulbousness. In other words, the lens has a curvature to compensate for the extra wideness it creates. This can be minimized by making your subject smaller in the frame. However, in most instances using this lens as a close up portrait lens results in face warping and so we rarely use it for such a purpose.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_column_text]

In Conclusion

If you need the absolute best 24mm to create your wedding photography this lens is it. If you find yourself in lots of cramped quarters that could benefit from its wide perspective, this lens could be a life saver and should be considered as an addition to your kit. Canon’s very best 24mm does come at quite a cost and should be considered carefully along others such as the Canon’s 28mm EF for cost to actual usage. However, if you desire the very best it’s hard to compete with the sharpness and capabilities that Canon’s 24mm 1.4 L provides.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_column_text]
